Neighbor to Neighbor
Installation, performance and a series of story circles in neighborhoods across Rhode Island.
In purchasing my last home in Rhode Island, I discovered a restrictive covenant that was still in the books, though contradictory to the law; it stated, “No persons of Chinese descent may purchase this house.” As an antidote to the ugly side of “community”, the lingering artifacts of racist policies, I created performance spaces to open up conversations about who has the right to have a home in my neighborhood. I modeled the spaces after knitting circles, creating a homey atmosphere with hand-knit sweaters and rugs. I collected stories of the neighborhood door to door, asking, “Who are your neighbors?
