Below: 8-hour Ironing Day, performance.

Installation with wooden ironing board, body-printed scroll, washbasin with origami boats.

I greeted visitors on the landing for 8 hours, ironing a wet sheet until dry, then re-wetting. As the day unfolded, I listened to women's stories about ironing underwear and handkerchiefs, the effect on their lives of the invention of polyester, and the status of owning a washer/dryer. I became the conduit for this social history, passing on the stories throughout the day, from one generation to another.
